About Oxford ACS
ABOUT US
The Oxford African and Caribbean Society (OACS) is a vibrant society at the University of Oxford, run by and for its students.
Within our ACS, we are committed to celebrating African and Caribbean culture and heritage, supporting the welfare of our members, and enriching their professional opportunities. As students navigate the various challenges that they may encounter at Oxford, academic or otherwise, the ACS is a home away from home where members can remain rooted in their identities proudly, happily and safely. Our diverse membership base consists of undergraduate and postgraduate students from all corners of the African and Caribbean continents, whose time at Oxford we aim to enrich by providing them the support of an entire community.
OUR PURPOSE
The Oxford ACS strives to fulfil two key aims: increasing the uptake of African and Caribbean students into the University of Oxford; and supporting the wellbeing, social development and professional growth of our current members.
Students of African and Caribbean heritage have been historically underrepresented in the University of Oxford and institutions of similar prestige. Through our various Access and Outreach opportunities we aim to ‘demystify’ Oxbridge, and empower students to reach their full potential. We strive to break down the systemic obstacles that may hinder students from aiming high and making competitive applications. In this way, the ACS not only serves current students, but future ones, too.
Once students join Oxford, the ACS delivers a variety of social events, career and welfare initiatives to ensure that our members can thrive, connect with each other, and enjoy themselves beyond the stress and demands of academic life. Our mission has been greatly supported by our sponsors, who not only provide us with the financial assistance and resources required to maintain the ACS ecosystem, but also support our members with exclusive career events and opportunities. We are proud to say that our diverse range of sponsors are some of the UK’s leading employer, providing only the best opportunities for our members.
OUR PROMISE
We promise to promote the social, cultural, mental and intellectual growth of all our members. We promise to ensure the ACS always offers something for all our members to benefit from. Whether you have a creative side, are career-orientated, or would just like to have some fun, we will continue to provide our members with a safe space for African and Caribbean students to thrive and succeed - not in spite of their identity, but because of it.
